Matthew 14:22-34
“Stay in the Boat”
Mark
Twain and his wife visited the Sea of Galilee and wanted to get on a
boat. When he asked the owner of the boat about the cost of a trip on
the Sea, the man replied: “It costs $25.” “Now I
know why Jesus walked on the water,” was Twain’s reply!
After feeding the 5000, Jesus walked on the Sea confirming the fact that he is above the laws of nature. St. Augustine said: “Miracles are not a contradiction of nature. They are only in contradiction to what we know of nature.” We surely know how limited our knowledge is!
When Jesus sent the disciples to the other side of the Sea and dismissed the crowd, He went up the mountainside and spent time in prayer. Going back down to the Sea of Galilee, he wanted to reach the disciples. He didn’t wait or use another boat; he just walked on the water! He is in control of nature. He is above nature.
At the sight of someone walking on the water, the disciples were terrified. Jesus comforted them saying: “It is I. Don’t be afraid.” We all know how Peter wanted to go to Jesus and what happened then. However, what about those who stayed in the boat? They worshipped Jesus and admitted that he was the Son of God (vs 33). It is okay to stay in the boat.
The boat often symbolizes
gathering of believers who meet and encourage each other.
The boat is where we gather to worship and study the Word of God.
The boat is where we come together to seek comfort.
The boat is where we find refuge in the storms of life.
The boat is where we plan the journey towards a safe shore.
It is where we are safe with our loved ones enjoying God’s protection and guidance.
This is not the whole story. Life is not about nice little boats. Like Peter, we need to get of of the boat.
Hear about it in the English sermon!
