Proverbs 2:1-8

California is called the Golden State.  Years ago thousands came here in search of gold. They did everything possible to find the gold.  They worked very hard in difficult situations with one goal in their mind:  to find the gold.

Our Scripture passage is guiding us today to find the “silver” (or gold) in our lives.

Let me go back to review what we were doing.

We started a new series studying the Book of Proverbs.  We spoke about the fear of the Lord as the beginning and source of wisdom.  We spoke about the influence of fathers and mothers in the upbringing of their children, how to have goals for our children, and whether those goals agree with what God wants for our children.

This Sunday we move to the second chapter of Proverbs.  Again we see that the parents are continuing their instruction to their child.

1.  God demands our full attention (1-4)

Question: How important is it for you to find the “wisdom of God” in your life?  How valuable is seeking His presence and wisdom?

There was a young student who was seeking God.  After a while he goes to the wise man of the village and says:  “I am searching God and I cannot find Him.”

The wise man takes this student to a nearby river and asks him to come close to the water.  Suddenly the wise man immerses the student’s head in the water.  The student fights back to take his head out of water but the wise man keeps the head in the water.  After a while, he releases him and the student breathes heavily and asks him angrily, “Why did you do this to me?”

The wise man answers, “What did you seek when you were in the water?”

The young boy says, “Air, of course.”

The wise man says, “Go and seek God likewise; God is there; you will find Him.”

God did find us through His Son Jesus Christ. The problem is us, we do not seek Him.

Our author is saying:  “My son, if you receive my words and treasure up my commandments with you, making your ear attentive to wisdom and inclining your heart to understanding; yes, if you call out for insight and raise your voice for understanding, if you seek it like silver and search for it as for hidden treasures”(1-4).

“My son, welcome to the world. It is a long journey and road is tough.  You are going to walk, stop, run, sometimes look around…  Listen, shamaa, obey the instructions I received from the Lord, and I am going to pass them to you.  Give full attention, my son, with your ears, your mouth, your heart, all of you… full attention.”

Many of you are parents and one of our roles is to teach our children how to drive.

Of course, before driving each child has to take a written exam about the laws of traffic and so on.  Then when they start driving with you, you sit with them, you ask them to adjust the mirror, adjust the seat, seatbelt, no music, no cell, no texting, full attention, start the engine, look around if it is safe to start, start driving, remember the rules, watch out for signs, lights, people, crazy drivers, on and on and on . California law requires 50 hours of driving and instructing with adults before they can get their license.  Why?

So the laws of driving become part of them.  Also the WISDOM of GOD has to become part of us. “…treasure up my commandments with you. Treasure up, store the commandments, so that the commandments and wisdom will become joyful and pleasant.  “…for wisdom will come into your heart, and knowledge will be pleasant to your soul” (vs 10).

We will continue in English.
